oUR HISTORY
United Presbyterian Church is a merger between First Presbyterian and Central Presbyterian churches. Before merging, both churches had a long history in Shawnee dating back to the earliest years of the 20th century. The two churches merged in the 1990’s, but stayed in the First Presbyterian Church building at 330 N. Beard Street. This historic, domed building was much beloved. But with increasing structural issues and a declining membership, the session made the difficult decision to leave the building in 2015.
However, the church is not contained by the building it inhabits. The congregation met in a former coffee house for two years, before buying its current building on Broadway. We have turned this place, that was once used for commerce, into a sacred space where you can commune with God and love your neighbor.
Our mission
God calls us into ministry. God calls us to be the church, to proclaim the good news of the gospel through our words and our deeds. At United Presbyterian we seek to love our neighbors and our neighborhood. We are committed to the downtown area of Shawnee, and seek to serve the people who live and work here. But we also seek to serve God globally, through ministries and offerings of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and in other missions. We seek to serve God and God’s people through worship, study, prayer and outreach.
Our Table, Christ’s table
The Presbyterian Church (USA) celebrates open communion. Anyone who trusts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is invited to partake. Due to the ongoing pandemic, we use individual sanitary plastic cups with wafers. We sing together every Sunday, but remain masked, due to the unpredic-table nature of the virus, and in solidarity with those for whom it is a deadly critical threat.
